Wandering Workshops

It’s been far too long since I wrote on this blog.  I’ve been sharing many a joyful moments and deep connections across South Africa and the UK, with journeys to Ghana and Uganda along the way.  Tonight, I’ve finally had a chance to look over some of the workshops I’ve been blessed to have a chance to run at festivals and retreat centres on both continents.

It’s been a magical journey and I’ve met some fantastic, like minded people who aim to live from heart, work on themselves and promote positive social change in the world.

From life mandalas, to meditation, awakening passions in the developing world to mindfulness, different places, same awakening manifesting.

From the wide spaciousness and openness of the Buddhafield community in Devon, to Learning Man, South Africa’s first talent exchange festival, a community blossoming through a collective vision of responsible living and open heartedness.  And running my own retreats in Essex and Herefordshire along with a close friend Sunnah Rose was especially fun.  I wanted to share some of my special moments in this photo mosaic.

Meditation and Mindfulness: Reactive vs Creative Mind

mindfulnessDuring my meditation retreats and workshops, we often explore the theme of mindfulness. But what is mindfulness? Put simply, it is being fully present in the moment whether sitting on a meditation pillow or washing up the dishes. It is being focused on this very moment with dedicated awareness. But why do we bother? Especially in this hectic, modern world where there’s always a hundred things to be thinking about, ten places we should be and a million things on our mental To Do list. The Art of Gratitude

gratitudeLife isn’t easy. In the not so distant past, I often found myself pissed off with my lot in life. Why did I have to commute for over 2 hours a day to earn a wage that didn’t even allow me to buy a shoebox somewhere? Why was it always raining? Why is everything always so hectic?

That was before I gradually discovered that how we experience life is all down to us. It’s all about perception. We can’t always control the things around us and we certainly can’t change the way other people think and behave.  What we can do is affect the way we perceive things, and in doing so, the world around us is transformed beyond recognition.

Yoga and Meditation Weekend 27-29th September

meditation-6To all my lovely followers, the time has come at last and I’ll be running a yoga and meditation retreat for the weekend of September 27th-29th in the beautiful Malvern Hills.  I’ll be running the retreat alongside the fabulous Sunnah Rose, who has been teaching yoga and running retreats for over ten years.  She also happens to be one of my best friends.

Whether you’re completely new to meditation and/or yoga or are hoping to deepen your practice, a retreat is a perfect opportunity for you to get away from it all and notice how the calming natural setting, like minded company and inspiring sessions help stimulate inner peace, enhance awareness and leave you feeling refreshed, open and compassionate to those around you.

The retreat is entitled Grounding: Moving out of your heads and into your body.  You can find out everything you need to know and book onto the retreat here.

Running Workshops at Buddhafield Festival

buddhafieldMy favourite festival, Buddhafield is back this year on 17th-21st July.  I’ll be running Life Mandala Workshops which will combine art, discussion and practical techniques to enable you to explore your current life circumstances, your deepest desires and how to transform your current reality into something more meaningful and closely aligned to your heart’s true desires.

I’ll also be running a workshop on Awakening your passions in the developing world. This workshop aims to encourage participants to think about the ways in which they can empower citizens to make positive changes in their own lives and communities and ensure that any activities they are involved in are likely to make a positive impact.

Stop Trying So Hard!

ImageHi all,

Sorry it’s taken me me so long to write a new post. I’m currently in Nigeria and the internet has been a bit erratic. Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful place. Lagos has got a buzz to it like no other and I’ve been inspired by the wide range of organisations which I’ve met out here-engaged Nigerians working hard to bring about change under tough conditions.

My Journey So Far

ImageLife is a wondrous journey, full of twists and turns, highs and lows, experiences both good and bad, all there to teach us something special.  They all make us who we are.  My life so far has been a big adventure, an opportunity to grow and evolve and increasingly open my heart and mind to something far greater than my insignificant ego ever thought was possible.

It was at about the age of twelve that I began to realise that the most important things in life aren’t those that can be measured or observed.  It was around the same time that I realised that something far greater than the endless chatter of an active mind was driving me.  Fast forward four years and it was yoga that initially shone a light on the beauty present in every moment, there for us to discover if only we became still enough and open enough to listen.

At eighteen, I stumbled across a poster at University: ‘Learn to meditate’.  I thought I might as well give it a go.  It wasn’t easy at first and for anyone who thinks that their first sit will lead to blissful awakening, think again.  But what I can say is that in my 16 years of practice,   my inner being has shifted beyond recognition.  More on this in subsequent posts.

During this time I’ve been exposed to a wide range of ‘spiritual practices’ ranging from an exploration of almost every world religion, with a particular soft spot for Buddhism and the wisdom it has to offer.  Be it yoga, tai chi, meditation, dance, breathing exercises or nature walking, to me it doesn’t matter.  It’s not the path you take, but the very moment of practice that matters to me.  As far as I’m concerned, I cherish anything that leads to greater connection, inner peace, awareness, discovery, personal growth, truth and joy.

Everyone has their own path to follow, but one of my aims in this lifetime, in the great words of Gandhi is to ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’.  We can only do this by looking deep inside ourselves and following our heart’s calling, whatever this may be.

I’ve run workshops on issues as far ranging as well-being, mindfulness, life mandalas, life coach training, sustainable development, peer education, youth empowerment, meditation and Buddhism at festivals and retreats, whilst working for charities and travelling the globe.  I’m also a wandering poet, using spoken word to convey my message and take people on a journey towards their kindred spirit.  I’ve run retreats and spend lots of time walking in nature, my greatest teacher.

I’ve also travelled the globe, living in Africa for two and a half years, volunteering, initiating projects and learning so much from the inspiring, diverse and generous people I’ve met along the way.

To me it’s life’s diversity that enables my path to unfold. I’ve taught both kids and teenagers, have written a novel (unpublished), numerous poems and articles in international newspapers, hold a PhD from Cambridge (in Science, would you believe!) and now run a small charity which empowers citizens in Africa to create the changes they wish to see in their own lives and communities.  But it’s not what I’ve achieved but the intention behind it that I cherish.

Some would say I’m a massive paradox.  I laugh and sing, philosophise and work, dance and play.  I can be as much intellectual as I am dappy and ridiculous, as much playful as I am serious, zany as I am conventional.  We are all complex beings and I choose not to fit into a box but to express what comes from my heart moment to moment.

I hope I can inspire others to do the same…..perhaps.  And I suspect I will have a lot to learn from all of you along the way.
